Vietnam: Mindful Moments in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam’s cities can offer very different daily rhythms. A morning in Hanoi and an afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City do not need the same routine, yet both can make space for brief moments of awareness. This Ng Ee Fang regional guide uses those cities as examples for ordinary mindful living. It is not a claim about her travel, residence or work.

In Hanoi, notice a beginning

A useful practice at the start of a day is to choose one priority before opening every message. Notice where you are, what needs your attention, and what can wait. If the morning is already busy, make the check-in shorter. One clear sentence can be enough: “First I will finish this task.” The aim is to reduce the feeling that everything must happen at once.

While walking or travelling, keep your attention on safety and the movement around you. You can notice colours, sounds and the pace of your steps without turning a route into a formal exercise. If you are distracted, gently return to the next practical decision. A mindful moment is compatible with a lively city; it does not require silence.

In Ho Chi Minh City, practice a transition

When one meeting, errand or conversation ends, take a brief pause before the next begins. Put away the previous task, notice your posture and ask what you need to carry forward. The two-minute reset between tasks offers one way to do this. You can shorten it to a single breath or extend it with a short walk when time allows.

Conversations can also benefit from a transition. Before replying, check that you heard the other person’s point accurately. A question such as “Do you mean…?” may prevent an unnecessary misunderstanding. The mindful listening guide gives more context. Listening well does not mean agreeing automatically or neglecting your own boundaries.

End with a realistic choice

At the end of the day, ask what helped and what used energy. If rest is needed, make it specific and possible: a meal away from screens, a short break or an earlier finish when circumstances permit. The rest article can help you think through those choices without promising that one habit will remove all stress.
